He was a person who knew many things about the Messenger of Allah (S) I said: Tell me how the Messenger of Allah spoke! Hindun replied: “The Messenger of Allah was always sad (while complaining to his Lord and witnessing His greatness, not because of the worldly). He never stopped thinking, was mostly silent, did not speak other than necessity. He began and ended conversations by mentioning the name of Allah. He spoke concisely but meaningfully. His words were detailed, without exaggeration and without subtraction. He was not harsh or insulting. He was always grateful for Allah’s favors, even if they were few, and never once criticized them. He also never criticized food. He was never angry over worldly matters. However, if the truth was violated, there was nothing that could prevent his anger until the truth was established. He was never angry and would not ask for a defense regarding his personal affairs. When pointing out something, the Prophet always used the entire palm of his hand; when he was amazed by something, he turned his palm upside down. When speaking to explain something, he always struck the right palm against the belly of the left thumb. At the same time, he will also feel indecisive about his major sins. After that, the next command (to the angel) will be, ‘Give him a good reward for every wrong he has done,’ then the person will say: ‘Surely there are more of my sins that are not shown. ‘ Abu Dhar said: At that time, I saw the Messenger of Allah laughing so that his molars were exposed.”

However, he saw that there were already people in the houses in heaven. He complained to his Lord, “O my Lord, there are already people in those houses. “The man was asked, “Do you remember your life in the world?” He replied, “Yes.” Then he was told, “Imagine (your wish)!” The man imagined his wish. Then, God said to him, “You got what you wanted, even ten times more than what was in the world. The man replied, “O my Lord! Are You playing games with me, when You are the Sovereign? Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said, “At that time, I saw the Messenger of Allah laughing so much that his molars were visible”.

After that, Ali said hamdalah three times, takbir three times as well, and prayed, “Glory to You, O Allah! Verily I have wronged myself, so forgive me. Indeed, only You can forgive our sins. Ali laughed and I asked him, “O Amirul Mu’minin, why are you laughing?” ‘Ali replied, “I saw the Messenger of Allah doing the same thing that I did earlier, and he laughed. Then I asked: What made him laugh? My father replied: There was a man holding a shield. At that time, Sa’ad served as an archer. The man said (while pointing to the right and left) such and such, while the shield covered his forehead. When the man raised his head, Sa’d released the arrow and it hit his forehead. The man fell down with his legs up. The Messenger of Allah laughed so that his molars were visible. I asked: What made the Messenger of Allah laugh? My father replied: What Sa’d did to the man.”

One of the wives said, this expression is like the speech of the khurafah. The Prophet replied: Do you all know what Khurafah is? Khurafah is the name of a man from the tribe of ‘Udzrah who was taken captive by the jinn in the days of ignorance. He lived with the jinn for a long period of time. Then the jinn returned him back to the human realm, and he told the humans about the marvelous things he had seen in the jinn realm. Hence, humans call it the story of Khurafah.

‘Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us, he said: ‘Isa ibn Yunus reported from Hisham reported from Urwah reported from his brother ‘Abdullah ibn Urwah reported from Urwah reported from ‘Aisha reported: “Eleven women were sitting and talking, and they agreed not to conceal anything about their husbands. The first woman said: “My husband is like the meat of a skinny camel who lives on the top of a rocky mountain (hard to reach because of his arrogance). There is no flat ground for him to walk on (his manners are not good) and his body is so lean that no fat can be extracted from it (no benefit to others). The second woman said: “I dare not speak about my husband. I am afraid of being divorced. If I tell him too he is like mentioning his neck and center (he has ugliness inside and out).” The third woman said: “My husband is tall thin (in build) and unattractive (in character). If I reveal his ugliness, I will be divorced. If I keep quiet, he will ignore me (as if I do not have a husband).” The fourth woman said: “My husband is like the night in Tihamah (a land between the coast and the mountains that has stable weather). It is neither hot nor cool. Neither frightening nor boring.” The fifth woman said: “My husband at home likes to sleep and rest, like a panther, while outside he is like a lion. He never questions what he gives to our household.” The sixth woman said: “My husband never leaves scraps on his food and drink. He uses the blanket alone while sleeping and never takes any notice of my condition”. The seventh woman said: My husband is barren and lacks wisdom. All the ills of this life are upon him. He can beat you or drive you away or both at once. Eighth woman says: My husband has a touch as soft as the touch of arnab, and his smell is as sweet as the fragrance of zarnab.” The ninth woman said: My husband is as tall as a pillar (he is highly respected in the community), as long as a sword (he is an officer), has a lot of ashes (the kitchen is always burning to cook for the guests who come to the house) and his house is close to the gathering place. The tenth woman said: My husband is a rich man. How rich? Rich is better than all that. He has many camels in his stable, but few in the herd. If the camels hear the sound of music, they know they will be slaughtered (and served to guests)”. The eleventh woman said: My husband was Abu Zar’in. He put jewelry in both my ears, made me fat and gave me a happy and contented life. Before meeting him, I lived among the poor and goat herders, but after meeting him, I was able to taste the pleasure of living among the owners of horses, camels, oxen and fields. I liked to talk with him, and my words were never considered bad. I could sleep peacefully until morning, and could drink my fill. My mother-in-law is also a woman who has a spacious dining room and a large house (a prosperous life). Our son has a simple and ideal body. He is not a strong eater. He can be satisfied with just a piece of mutton leg meat. Our daughter, too, is obedient to both her parents. She is in good shape and whoever sees her beauty and character will be jealous. We have a maid who does not gossip. She is also trustworthy and always keeps our house clean.” The eleventh woman continued her story, “One day, Abu Zar’in went out traveling. At that time, the milk of the pets that were being processed was abundant. On his way, Abu Zar’in met an attractive woman with two cubs who were lively like star tigers. After that, Abu Zar’in divorced me and married the woman. I also married a noble and generous man. He was adept at horseback riding and wielding the Kaththi spear (the name of the place where this spear was made is a village on the sea coast of Oman). One evening, he showed me his animals and gave me a pair of every animal he had. He said: ‘O Ummu Zar’in! Eat them and give them to your family!’ Even if I collected all his kindness and gifts to me, it still could not match Abu Zar’in’s smallest gift. “Then Aisha said, ‘The Messenger of Allah said to me, I am to you as Abu Zar’in is to Ummu Zar’in’)”.

I am only a slave, so say that I am a slave of Allah and His Messenger.”

Narrated to us Ali ibn Hujr, he said: Suwaid narrated from Abdulaziz narrated from Humaid narrated from Anas bin Malik: “A woman met the Messenger of Allah and said: Actually, I have a need with you. Then he replied: Sit wherever you want in the streets of Madinah, I will surely come to listen to your needs”.

Wasil ibn Abdula’la al-Kufi narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Fudhail reported from al A’mash from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) was invited to eat wheat bread with stale butter. he fulfilled the invitation. He also had a pair of armor that was pawned to a Jew. Until his death, the Messenger of Allah was not able to redeem the armor.”

Narrated to us Mahmud b. Ghailan, he said: Abu Dawud al-Hafari told us from Sufyan from ar-Rabi’ bin Shobih from Yazid bin Aban from Anas bin Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah (saw) performed Hajj while sitting on a worn-out saddle covered with cloth that cost less than four dirhams. He prayed: O Allah, make this Hajj a Hajj that has no riya’ and no sum’ah”.

Narrated to us Abdullah ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman, he said: Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad bin Salamah narrated from Humaid from Anas bin Malik, who said: “There is no one whom the Companions love more than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When they see him, they do not stand up because they know that he does not like that”.

He narrated to us Sufyan bin Waki’, who said: Jumai’ bin ‘Umar bin ‘Abdur-Rahman al-Ijli narrated to us, he said: A man from Banu Tamim who was the son of Abu Halah (Khadijah’s husband) called Abu Abdillah from Ibn Abi Halah from Hasan ibn ‘Ali, has narrated to us: I once asked my uncle, Hindun bin Abu Halah, about the attributes of the Messenger of Allah (saw) I wanted to hear him narrate some of the attributes of the Messenger of Allah (saw), Hindun said: “The Messenger of Allah (S) was majestic and authoritative. His face was as bright and radiant as the luster of the full moon”. Then, Hindun mentioned the hadith until the end. Al-Hasan said: I kept the description of the Prophet’s attributes secret from al-Husayn for a long time. When I conveyed the hadith about the attributes of the Messenger of Allah to al-Husayn, it seems that he already knew it before me. He had asked Hindun what I had asked him. In fact, he had also asked his father about the times when the Messenger of Allah (saw) entered and left the house and his physical form. His father told him everything, without leaving anything out. Al-Husein bin Ali said: “I asked my father about the nature of the Messenger of Allah when he entered the house. Then my father replied: (When the Messenger of Allah (saw) arrived and entered the house, he divided his time into three parts, one part for Allah, one part for his family and one part for himself. The time for himself was also divided into two parts, one for his special person and the other for his people. The Messenger of Allah did not hide a single thing from them. Among the Prophet’s habits when he was with his people was to give precedence to the noble ones with his permission to address the people’s problems. The Prophet divided the people’s problems based on their level of maslahat in religious matters. Some of them have one need (related to religion), some have two or more desires. The Messenger of Allah (saw) occupied himself with taking care of those who had needs. From that question, the Prophet guided them to do things that would benefit themselves and the entire Ummah. He also told them what was best for them. The Prophet advised: All of you who are present here should convey to those who are not present. Also convey to me the wishes of those who are unable to convey them themselves. For, whoever conveys the wishes of others who are unable to do so to a government, Allah will establish his feet on the Day of Judgment’. The things that were told to the Prophet were only those that were beneficial. He did not accept it unless it was necessary and beneficial for the one who conveyed it. Dignitaries met the Messenger of Allah with requests and problems. They did not go home except after getting provisions (knowledge and morals) and came out with evidence (as a guide to goodness). Al-Husein bin Ali narrates again: I asked him about the behavior of the Messenger of Allah when he left home, what did he do? My father replied: The Messenger of Allah (saw) restrained and guarded his tongue, except in matters that were beneficial to him. The Messenger of Allah was able to make their hearts close and happy with him, and did not make them turn away from him. The Messenger of Allah honored the noblest person in every community and placed him as a leader for that community. The Messenger of Allah always warned people and kept himself away from the evil of people, without hiding his cheerful face and noble character. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) paid attention to the situation of his companions and asked what was happening to his people. He praised good deeds and criticized bad ones. All things according to His Majesty are simple. Nothing less and nothing more. The Messenger of Allah was never negligent, worrying if they would be negligent and turn away. he had a measure and preparation for all matters. he did not reduce the right or exceed the limit. People who are close to the Messenger of Allah are the best people. The most honorable person in the sight of the Messenger of Allah is the one who gives the most advice to the people. The most exalted people in the sight of the Messenger of Allah are those who have the kindness to help and assist him. Al-Husein bin Ali continued his story: I also asked him about the sitting of the Messenger of Allah (saws) My father replied: (The Messenger of Allah (saws) did not get up and did not sit except with dhikr. If he approached a gathering (that was sitting), he would sit in an empty place in the gathering. He ordered his Ummah to do the same (when attending gatherings). He made those who sat in the gathering feel that no one was more honored by him than themselves. Whoever invited the Messenger of Allah to sit or talk about a need, he would be patient so that the person would end his conversation and leave first. Whoever asked the Messenger of Allah (S) for a favor would not be denied as long as he was able to fulfill it, or if he was not able to, he would say the kindest words possible. His serene face and beautiful manners can be felt by all people. The Messenger of Allah is like a father to them and they have equal rights with him. The Messenger of Allah’s Majlis was a majlis filled with shyness, trustworthiness and patience. No one raised his voice, no noble person was criticized, no evil was spread. They were all on equal footing. They respect each other, are full of piety and humble themselves. In the majlis, they honor the old, love the young, give precedence to the needy and safeguard the rights of those who are new among them”.

The Messenger of Allah (S) was the one with the best manners. I have never touched silk or any other soft cloth that is softer than his palms. And there is no smell of perfume more fragrant than the sweat of the Messenger of Allah.”

Qutaibah ibn Sa’id and Ahmad ibn Abdah both said: Hammad bin Zayd from Salam al-Alawi from Anas bin Malik narrated: “One day, there was a person who was near the Messenger of Allah, who had sufroh (like turmeric, yellow in color) on him. He did not forget things that were considered vain, nor did he like to expect requests from others and if he did not like a request, he would refuse kindly. He forbade three things to himself, namely arguing, multiplying wealth and also doing things that have no benefit. The Prophet also forbade these three things to his Ummah: criticizing, disgracing and finding fault with others. The Prophet only spoke when he was rewarded for doing so. When he spoke, everyone who heard would be transfixed (as if there was a bird over their heads) and only opened their mouths when he was finished. The Companions would not scramble to speak in his presence. When one of the Companions spoke, the others would remain silent and listen. And the one next to the Prophet was the one who spoke first. When the Companions laughed at something, he would laugh too. Likewise, he would admire something if the Companions admired it. When a friend asked for help, he would say: Help this person who has a desire if you all see him trying.” The Prophet only accepted praise from people who had received his help. The companions answered: Yes, the Messenger of Allah said again: Order Bilal to call the adhan and ask Abu Bakr to be the prayer leader! After that, the Prophet fainted. When he woke up, he asked: Has the time for prayer come? The companions replied: Yes, the Messenger of Allah said: Order Bilal to call to prayer and ask Abu Bakr to lead the prayer! A’isyah said: My father is a man who is easily saddened. If he takes your place as imam, he will cry, so he will not be able to, if you order someone else (to be the imam) then it is better. Then, the Messenger of Allah fainted again. When he regained consciousness, he said: Order Bilal to call to prayer and ask Abu Bakr to lead the prayer! You are like the woman in the story of Joseph. Then Bilal gave the call to prayer and Abu Bakr was called to be the prayer leader. After that, the Messenger of Allah (saw) felt his pain lighter. And he said: Find someone for me to lean on! Then, Barirah came with another person. The Messenger of Allah also leaned on them both. When Abu Bakr saw the condition of the Messenger of Allah, he wanted to return, but the Messenger of Allah signaled Abu Bakr not to move from his place, until Abu Bakr finished praying. After that the Messenger of Allah passed away. Then Umar said: By Allah! I do not want to hear anyone say that the Messenger of Allah has died. If he does, I will cut off his head with my sword. At that time, the people who were there did not know what to do because they had no prophet before the Messenger of Allah. They said: O Salim! Go and meet the companions of the Messenger of Allah and call him here. I went to meet Abu Bakr who was in the mosque. I cried in confusion. When Abu Bakr looked at me, he asked: Has the Messenger of Allah passed away? I replied: Umar has said: I do not want to hear anyone say that the Messenger of Allah has died. If he does, I will cut off his head with this sword of mine. “Hearing this, Abu Bakr said: Let us go. I set out with Abu Bakr. When Abu Bakr arrived, many people had entered the Prophet’s room. Abu Bakr said: O people! Make way for me to enter! The people who were there made way for him. Abu Bakr approached the body of the Messenger of Allah and recited: Verily you, O Muhammad, will die, and verily they too will die.” (Surah az-Zumar, verse 30) Then, those who were there said, “O companion of the Messenger of Allah! Has the life of the Messenger of Allah been taken away? Abu Bakr replied: Yes! They were convinced that Abu Bakr was telling the truth. Afterward, the same people asked: O companions of the Messenger of Allah! Was the body of the Messenger of Allah prayed over? Abu Bakr replied: Yes!, They asked again: How? Abu Bakr replied: A group of people enter and say takbir, and perform the funeral prayer, pray and then leave. After that, another group enters, makes takbir, offers the funeral prayer, prays and exits. And so on until everyone has entered. “The same person asked again, “O companions of the Messenger of Allah! Was the body of the Messenger of Allah buried? Abu Bakr replied: Yes! They asked: Where? Abu Bakr replied: In the place where Allah took his life. because, Allah did not take the life of the Messenger of Allah except in a good place. They were sure Abu Bakr was telling the truth. After that, Abu Bakr ordered the family of the Prophet’s father to bathe him. After that, the Muhajirin deliberated. They said: Let us all go to meet our brothers the Ansar. We invite them together to discuss this matter. Then, one of the Ansar said: From among us a leader, from among you a leader. “Umar kept replying, “Whoever has these three virtues, (Umar recited verse 40 of surah at-Taubah which means)” He was one of the two men during their shelter in the cave, when he said to his companions: Do not grieve, verily Allah is with us, Who are the two men in this verse? After that, Umar reached out and pledged Abu Bakr’s allegiance. The people there also pledged allegiance to him with a beautiful pledge of allegiance”.

The Messenger of Allah replied: There is no more pain for your father after today. Indeed death has approached your father, no one can escape from it. The meeting (with death) will definitely occur until the Day of Judgment”.

Abul Khatthab Ziad bin Yahya Al Bashri and Nasr bin Ali both said: Abdu Rabbih bin Bariq Al-hanafi narrated to us and said: I heard my grandfather (my mother’s father) Samak bin Walid narrate that he heard Ibn Abbas say: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: “Whoever among my Ummah has two farath⁹, Allah will admit that person into Paradise through the intercession of those two children. Aisha said: What about your Ummah who has one farath? The Prophet replied: So is it with my Ummah who has a farath. O muwaffaqah! Aisha asked again: What about your Ummah that does not have a farath? The Messenger of Allah replied: I am the farath for my people. They will not be afflicted with a calamity like my death.”
